Did you know….
Compact Florescent lightbulbs (CLFs) have a small amount of mercury in them. These lightbulbs don’t cause harm while intact.
If a lightbulb with mercury is broken, What do you do?
- Ventilate the room by opening a window or turning on a ceiling fan. Ventilate for 10-15 minutes.
- Leave the room while it is airing out.
- Wear rubber gloves to carefully pick up the broken glass and dispose into a plastic bag
- Remove the mercury beads or dust with a thin piece of paper or cardboard by swooping the matter onto it.
- Dispose of it into the plastic bag with the broken glass.
- Use sticky tape to remove any mercury or glass. Do not use a vacuum cleaner. Dispose of the tape into the plastic bag.
- Use a dampened paper towel to remove any particles left behind from the broken lightbulb.
Home Depot and Lowes collect broken or unbroken light bulbs.
